EFFICIENCY THROUGH TECHNIQUE

The fastest-looking technique is often the one with the least unnecessary movement.

Monofin freediving is not simply bi-finning with a larger blade. Efficient propulsion comes from coordinated movement through the body, stable alignment and careful control of amplitude and rhythm.

The specialty develops the fundamentals needed to use a monofin more efficiently in the pool and, where appropriate, in open-water depth training.

Quick answer: SSI lists Monofin for Freediver-certified students or higher from age 12. A separate Monofin Pool route is available from Pool Freediver level. Open-water training stays within the diver’s existing certification depth limits.
Prerequisites: Minimum age 12. For the open-water Monofin specialty, SSI Freediver certification or equivalent is required. Pool Freedivers may be eligible for the Monofin Pool specialty.

WHO THIS IS FOR

Interested in monofin, but unsure how to create power without bending excessively at the knees?

This specialty is for freedivers who want to learn the body-wave mechanics and streamlining that make monofin propulsion efficient.

  • You want to learn monofin from the fundamentals.
  • You already use a monofin but feel inefficient or unstable.
  • You want to transfer better streamlining and rhythm into pool or depth diving.

WHAT WE WORK ON

Make the movement smaller, cleaner and more connected.

The exact sequence adapts to the diver and conditions, while the required SSI standards remain the foundation of the program.

01

Equipment & fit

Set up the monofin and understand how fit affects control and comfort.

02

Body wave

Build the movement pattern from the torso instead of kicking from the knees.

03

Timing & amplitude

Find an efficient rhythm without creating excess drag.

04

Turns & streamlining

Practice clean body position, direction changes and stable streamlining.

05

Freediving application

Transfer the technique into breath-hold swimming or depth work within your certification level.

WHAT YOU DEVELOP

Skills you can take into your next training session.

01

Body wave

Coordinate movement through the whole body.

02

Dolphin kick

Develop an efficient kick with appropriate amplitude.

03

Streamlining

Reduce drag through head, shoulder and hip alignment.

04

Rhythm

Use timing that supports efficiency rather than speed alone.

05

Turns

Control direction changes without losing position.

06

Depth application

Use the technique safely within existing certification limits.

Course outcome: You leave with a clearer body-wave pattern, better timing, improved streamlining and a set of drills you can use to continue developing monofin technique.

WHY LIFE AQUATIC IN KAŞ

Small groups. Direct feedback. Skills before numbers.

At Life Aquatic we break monofin technique into small pieces — body wave, amplitude, rhythm, alignment and turns — before asking for longer or deeper performances.

WHAT WE PRIORITIZE

Technique that still works when the dive gets harder.

We use progressive practice, individual feedback and realistic session goals so the skill you learn is repeatable — not something that only worked once during the course.

COURSE FAQ

Questions before you start.

Who can take the Monofin specialty?

SSI lists Monofin for students age 12+ with Freediver certification or higher, or an accepted equivalent.

Can a Pool Freediver learn monofin?

SSI also has a Monofin Pool specialty available from Pool Freediver level.

Is monofin technique difficult?

It is different from bi-fins. The main challenge is coordinating the body wave while remaining streamlined and relaxed.

Can I use a monofin for depth training?

Yes, within the limits of your certification and the program being conducted.

Do I need my own monofin?

Contact us before booking so we can confirm equipment requirements and availability.

Does monofin make everyone faster?

Only when technique is efficient. Poor timing or excessive movement can increase drag and effort.

Do I need to own a monofin?

Contact us before booking. We will confirm the equipment requirements and whether suitable equipment is available for your session.

Will monofin make me deeper immediately?

Not necessarily. Efficient monofin technique takes practice. The goal of the specialty is to build mechanics that can support future performance.
